photoSophomore Desirae Ness has been nominated as the December Heartland Beat Student of the Month by Mrs. Linda Zuehlsdorf, Heartland Family & Consumer Science teacher. Even though Ness has only been attending Heartland High School since last April, she has made a positive impact and many friends.

“She is so upbeat, helpful to others, and pitches in whenever needed. She shows a lot of compassion to others and is getting more and more involved in school activities,” said Zuehlsdorf. Ness likes “everything” and prefers using her hands to help her learn, especially the drafting class she is taking this semester.

Besides keeping up with her studies and working part-time at Henderson Foodmart, Ness is no stranger to volunteering. She worked early mornings and evenings at the annual MCC Canner last month held at the Bethesda Mennonite Church. “The coolest part was sitting there at 5:00 a.m. having coffee and doughnuts with a bunch of farmers!” said Ness. She really enjoyed using her hands to clean cans and grind meat while working at the canner. She loves kids and volunteers at Faith Evangelical Bible Church where she babysits for their Sunday night service.

“I love Henderson and all the nice people I have met,” said Ness. In January, she will be turning her strong desire to help others into a future job. She will begin taking basic nursing assistant classes to become a CNA through Southeast Community College. After completing her training, she is excited about the job opportunities at either the hospital or nursing home and possibly going into nursing at the college level.

Ness participated in volleyball last fall and hopes to take chorus next semester because of her love of music. She currently lives at the Girls’ Cottage at Grace Children’s Home, and her family lives in Holdrege. Congratulations to Desirae Ness for being chosen as the Heartland Beat Student of the Month!
