A Key to Better Sleep, Better Health, and Better Smiles

When most people think about oral health, they think about cavities and gum disease. However, your dentist can also play an important role in identifying airway concerns that may affect your sleep, overall health, and quality of life.

A healthy airway allows you to breathe comfortably through your nose, both day and night. When the airway becomes narrowed or obstructed, the body may struggle to get enough oxygen during sleep. Over time, this can contribute to fatigue, poor concentration, teeth grinding, snoring, and obstructive sleep apnea.

Common Signs and Symptoms

Children

  • Mouth breathing
  • Chronic snoring
  • Restless sleep or frequent waking
  • Dark circles under the eyes
  • Difficulty focusing or hyperactivity
  • Crowded teeth or narrow dental arches
  • Delayed growth or poor weight gain

Adults

  • Loud snoring
  • Waking up gasping or choking
  • Daytime fatigue despite a full night’s sleep
  • Morning headaches
  • Dry mouth upon waking
  • Teeth grinding or jaw soreness
  • Difficulty concentrating or memory problems

How Can Your Dentist Help?

During your dental examination, we evaluate more than just your teeth. We may look for signs of tooth wear from grinding, narrow dental arches, enlarged tonsils or tongue position, mouth-breathing habits, facial growth patterns in children, and other oral findings that may indicate an increased risk of airway problems.

If airway concerns are suspected, we may recommend further evaluation or collaborate with your primary care physician, sleep medicine physician, orthodontist, ENT specialist, or myofunctional therapist.

Treatment Options

  • Orthodontic expansion to improve arch development
  • Oral appliance therapy for appropriate adults
  • Myofunctional therapy
  • Treatment of enlarged tonsils or adenoids when appropriate
  • CPAP therapy for certain patients
  • Lifestyle modifications such as weight management and healthy sleep habits

Early identification is especially important in children because proper airway development can influence facial growth, sleep quality, learning, and behavior.

If you or your child snores regularly, breathes primarily through the mouth, experiences restless sleep, or frequently feels tired despite adequate sleep, let us know. A dental examination may help identify signs that warrant further evaluation.
