What a difference air conditioning makes for a successful event at the Henderson Mennonite Heritage Park. Instead of enduring the heat in the Ag building, this year’s More Fun Facts & Stories of Henderson was held in the comfortable air-conditioned Gathering Room.
About 80 people attended the event, and it was entertaining, to say the least. There were plenty of yummy salads to go around, and the program was quite interactive! HeartlandBeat photo
Each table of 8 or 9 discussed the possible answers to 14 intriguing questions. Here’s a good one: “Who in town has a father who is buried in Carlsbad, New Mexico, yet his father’s leg is buried in North Dakota? Just so you know, this is not a trick question?”
HHTC President Suzanne Ratzlaff was the MC and not only gave the answers but often had an interesting story to go with the answers. The answer to the above question was Norm Yoder. The story was that his father had a farm accident at a younger age, which resulted in a partial leg amputation, and for some reason his amputated leg got buried with a sign marker in North Dakota. Later, when he died, he was buried in New Mexico.
Another good one was “Who once gave Roy Rogers an IV?” The answer was Janet Huebert, who told Suzanne he said to her, “Make sure you only have to stick me once.”
Roy Rogers was popular this year and was the answer for two questions! One was “Who was the famous television cowboy who once went pheasant hunting in Hamilton County? Roy Rogers, of course. He also apparently offered to adopt Charlie Friesen, who now resides at Legacy Square, when he was a little boy living in California with his parents, Henry R. and Anne Friesen.
At the end of the program, Arlin Hiebner demonstrated an 1889 restored Thomas Edison phonograph that used cylinders to play music. It was donated to the Heritage Park by David Kasbohm who lives south of Hastings.
