Library considers new programming possibilities
Kilgore Memorial Library is requesting the same amount of funding it received from the county last year: $17,500.
Some of that funding will be directed towards updating the collection.
“This goes to continuing to build our electronic resources and our print resources that we have in the library,” said library director Holli Duggan. “We would like to focus on some large-print materials as well.”
It will also support library programming, such as expanded hours at the makerspace that opened in January, and events both in and out of the library.
“We’d like to do more events around the county: maybe some pop-up events like story times, crafting, maybe some mobile makerspace programs,” Duggan said.
The library is also creating a new strategic plan. Part of that planning includes determining how to use the library’s lawn.
“We’ve talked about maybe pollinator gardens and some education connecting to nature … or connecting with the Creative District to create some sort of stage or amphitheater,” Duggan said.
YCDC requests increased county funding
The York County Development Corporation is requesting a 3-5% increase in funding from the county. That would mean the county would pay $2,300 to $3,800 more than they paid this past year.
The funding increase will allow YCDC to continue encouraging growth of housing, infrastructure, and other development, said Executive Director Lisa Hurley said.
“These projects require staff time, coordination, data tools and follow-through,” Hurley said. “Without that capacity, projects can stall and opportunities can be missed.”
In an annual report, Hurley explained the organization’s contributions to the county.
“Our housing efforts have supported nearly $9 million in housing investment … We also maintain an active business retention and expansion program, which is critical because much of the county’s growth comes from our existing businesses,” she said.
She also described some recent YCDC projects.
“We recruited the developer for the Center for Rural Affairs funding,” Hurley said. “That will bring three duplexes and one single-family house.”
Additionally, a new hotel will soon be constructed near the interstate.
The developer “didn’t want to give a hard and fast date because he doesn’t want to disappoint people, but before the end of summer is what we’re looking at,” Hurley said.
