York County Press Release
YORK – It’s that time of year again when the valuation protest process is starting.
York County Assessor Kurt Bulgrin met with the York County Commissioners (sitting as the board of equalization) this past week, to talk about the timeline.
Valuation statements will be mailed out on Monday, June 1. As they are received, property owners will be able to view their valuations..
Those who wish to protest their most recent property valuations must file their protests by the end of June. The commissioners and county officials want everyone to remember how slow the mail system is now, so they must make sure their protest filings are received by the deadline.
Then, hearings will be scheduled for those property owners, if they wish to be heard by the county board of equalization.
Possible public hearing dates are June 24, July 7 and July 21. There is a possibility an evening meeting could be scheduled for July 7, depending on the number of valuation protests that are filed.
During those public hearing meetings, a time will be scheduled for each protestor, not to exceed 10 minutes each.
The protestors which have a scheduled time at the hearing will need to be presented 15 minutes prior.
The board of equalization hears the argument of the property owner and the recommendation of the county assessor, then makes a decision as to whether the recommendation of the assessor stands or if the valuation should be changed.
If the property owner still disagrees with the decision of the board, they can still file an appeal with the Nebraska Tax Equalization Review Commission (TERC).
