York County Historical Association Release
The York County Historical Association (YCHA) has existed since 1969 with the purpose of preserving and telling the stories of York County and the people who have called it home for more than 150 years, but now, we need your help to keep fulfilling that mission.
After more than 40 years at the York County Fairgrounds, in 2025 the county asked the Historical Association to consider finding a new location. We were fortunate to find that location at the historic Chapman Building, located downtown on Sixth Street in the heart of York. From this new location, we are more accessible and visible to the people of York County.
That move, however, came with a cost. Last year we made a request for a small tax allocation in the county budget amounting to $30,000 total to help cover our basic operating and preservation expense associated with the move to a new location. Our County Board of Commissioners approved our request and expressed their support for the vital work of the Association, but unfortunately, due to state statutes, we could only increase the amount awarded by 2.5% from the previous tax request, which had been very low since the county provided our building. So, despite county approval, we could not get the money we so desperately need to exist. That’s why we need you!
During the May 12 Primary Election, we are asking the voters of York County to approve our tax request for a total allocation of $30,000. The resolution will ask:
Shall the York County Historical Association be authorized to increase its tax levy to a rate not to exceed 0.000616, which levy would generate approximately $30,000 annually based on the current certified taxable valuation, for the purpose of funding the operation, preservation, and programming of the York County Historical Association?
This tax ask represents a very small property tax amount of $0.62/$100,000 of valuation. While this is a tiny amount of money for our taxpayers, it represents everything for us as an organization. Without this support, the work of the York County Historical Association will cease. History doesn’t preserve itself. It lives on because people like you care enough to protect it. Please support us and VOTE YES on Tuesday, May 12!
If you have questions or want to talk more, we will be meeting with the Henderson Chamber of Commerce on Monday, April 6th at The Hatchery at 12:00 then join us for a meet and greet from 1:00-2:00 p.m.. You can also join the organization as a member or donate to our cause, by mailing a check to YCHA, 109 E. 6th Street, York, NE 68467, or stopping by our building from 9-Noon on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
