Four Corners Health Department Press Release

June is National Safety Month, and it’s the perfect time to remind everyone about the importance of securing cargo on vehicles.

Every year, unsecured loads cause thousands of crashes on U.S. roads. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), debris from vehicles contributes to about 51,000 crashes and nearly 10,000 injuries each year. Many of these crashes are preventable.

Whether you’re hauling yard waste, luggage, furniture, or tools, it’s important to secure your load properly before hitting the road. A mattress or suitcase flying off a truck can quickly turn into a deadly hazard for the cars behind you.  Taking a few extra minutes to tie things down or use a tarp can make all the difference. It’s about keeping everyone on the road safe — including you.

In Nebraska, drivers are required by law to secure any items being transported. The Nebraska Department of Transportation and Highway Safety Office reminds drivers that failure to secure a load is not only dangerous but also illegal.

Tips for Securing Your Load:

  • Secure your items with straps, ropes, or nets tied down to something that will not move or shift.
  • Cover loose materials like dirt, leaves, branches or gravel with a tarp.
  • Double-check that items won’t move when you brake, turn, or accelerate.
  • Don’t overload your vehicle. Keep items below the sides of your truck bed or trailer.

The National Safety Council supports efforts like “Secure Your Load” as part of broader road safety initiatives during National Safety Month.

Let’s all do our part. Before you drive, check your load. Secure it. Cover it. Drive safely.
