York County Press Release
YORK – Soon, property owners in the Heartland School District and York County will receive pink postcards in the mail notifying them of a public hearing during which representatives of the two taxing entities will be discussing the need to increase tax asking for the 2026-27 fiscal year.
The two entities will be present at the same location for the one hearing. It will be held Sept. 16 at 6:01 p.m., in the basement meeting room of the York County Courthouse.
The official intent of the hearing is to “obtain public input on property tax increases proposed by the subdivisions.”
The Heartland property tax request is $5,488,564 and the York County property tax request is $9,712,972.28.
There is no item on the agenda for this joint public meeting other than discussion of each political subdivision’s intent to increase its property tax request by a percentage greater “than the allowable growth percentage” defined by state law.
Heartland representatives will make their presentations first, to then be followed by comments from the York County Commissioners.
Nebraska’s Property Tax Request Act (LB644) was passed by the state legislature in 2021 and took effect in 2022. The act requires postcards to be sent to each parcel owner (in a taxing sub-district) which includes details about proposed increases and location information for a special hearing. The expense of the postcards is covered by the political subdivision holding the hearing.
