YORK – A bizarre situation unfolded Wednesday morning, at 4:20 a.m., when York County Emergency Communications was contacted by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, regarding a train hitting a motor vehicle.

According to the York County Sheriff’s Office, “The preliminary investigation determined a southbound SUV on Highway 81 left the roadway near mile marker 63, and came to rest on top of the railroad tracks below the highway. After the vehicle came to rest, it was struck by an eastbound BNSF locomotive. Deputies with the York County Sheriff’s Office and officers with the York Police Department arrived on scene and located the driver of the SUV deceased. No BNSF employees were injured in the crash.”

The identity of the driver, who did not reside in the area, is being withheld at this time until proper identification and family notifications are made.

Sgt. Jordan Dickson says, “If you have any information regarding this incident, please reach out to the York County Sheriff’s Office at 402-362-4927. The York County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend it thanks to the York Police Department, York Fire Department, Nebraska Department of Transportation, Moguls Towing, and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for their assistance with this incident.”
