It wasn’t the opener the Bearcats had planned, with both the girls and boys losing to the visiting Fairbury Jets on Thursday at the Heartland gym. The boys lost 54-44, and the girls lost 51-40. Both teams will be back in action, traveling to face off against the Wilbur Wolverines on Friday night.

The girls had trouble scoring in the first quarter, but more than made up for it in a great second quarter, scoring a whopping 22 points. They ended the half with a seven-point lead after Hiebner was fouled on a three-point attempt and made two out of her three free throws.

The Bearcats’ offense was stymied in the third quarter and trailed 35-31 at the end of the quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Bearcats got to within five points after a 3-pointer by Hiebner, but the Jets’ shooting was too much for the Bearcats to overcome. Senior Mia Hiebner led the Bearcats in scoring with 15 points.

In the opening game of the season, the Bearcat boys ended up on the losing end of a hard-fought physical game. The Bearcats got off to a slow start, trailing the Jets by as much as 11 points in the second quarter. They narrowed the margin before half with a bucket by Rojewski to get within seven, down 30-23.

In the third quarter, the Bearcats got as close as 36-33, but their offense stalled out. The Bearcats had a spark in the fourth quarter when Goertzen stole the ball, made a layup, and got the Bearcats within four points. They were led in scoring by freshman Jagger Regier with 12 points. The Bearcats were without the services of senior Wyatt Dose, who was out with an injury.
