Who doesn’t love a summer filled with bursting blooms in gardens and yards? This week I spotted one of my favorites because it’s such a “surprise” every year.

The lily is officially called Lycoris but is otherwise appropriately called Surprise Lilies, Resurrection Lilies, or Naked Ladies! What’s so surprising about them is that in the spring, they sprout up with plenty of bright green foliage, but die back in mid-summer, disappearing completely. But later in the summer, when they’ve been forgotten, they rise up seemingly out of nowhere!

These Surprise Lilies below seemed to have sprouted up right in the middle of Charley & Cindy Quiring’s lawn in between mowings!

They can come in a variety of colors (white, red, yellow, orange, and pink), but here in Henderson, I only spotted the pink variety while biking around town this week.
