Trim the tree, hang some lights, and find your favorite ugly sweater as we celebrate Christmas in July during  Henderson Community Days. You can find many ways to participate in the 25 events scheduled for this years community celebration taking place on July 11-13.  With such a large list of events, there are certain events that will be exciting for different age groups.

If you are a kid.
You will have a busy schedule starting with the Henderson Swimming Pool opening at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday be sure to watch the parade on Main Street at 10:30 a.m. and then plan to spend the afternoon in the downtown park participating in the free inflatable activities, eating a sno-cone, and having story time with Princess Belle. Saturday evening take your parents back to the pool for the Family Pool Party and get a temporary tattoo from Princess Ariel at 7:00 p.m.

If you are a junior high/high school student.
We know you have a lot of energy and want to have a good time, so we have a new event called the Selfie Scavenger Hunt for you and your family.  Grab you iPod, iPhone, iPad, camera, or just a group of friends and try to find the places along our scavenger hunt. First person to post a picture from each location online with #heyhende will win a t-shirt. Clues for the scavenger hunt will be available at FoodMart on Friday at 10:00 a.m. After hunting all day, head to the Dodgeball Tournament on Friday night put on by the Heartland FFA. If team sports aren’t your thing, we still have you covered with the 5K/10K Run/Walk on Saturday morning.

If you are an adult.
While there is a lot going on for the kids, we still have a full schedule of events for adults and families. The fun kicks off Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. with the Friesen Gallery Art Show and you are invited to participate in the Selfie Scavenger Hunt too and give the students a run for their money (more information above under junior high/high school). Bring your family to the Chamber BBQ on Friday evening and stick around to hear Orin Friesen and the Green Flamingos. On Saturday morning be sure to check out the 5K and 10K races if you are athletically inclined or cheer on the runners along the race route and then head over to Heritage Park for the pancake feed. Be sure to check out the Main Street Parade, which will start at the south end of Main Street at 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning. In the afternoon, don’t miss the Alumni Basketball Tournament, Car Show, and activities in the downtown park. We don’t have a meal planned for Saturday evening, but we encourage you to use this time to hold a backyard BBQ with your friends and family and then watch the fireworks show together that evening. On Sunday you can compete in the 2 person scramble golf tournament or head to Heritage Park for the afternoon.

If you are an alumni.
Whether you are visiting Henderson for a reunion or just making a point to be in Henderson during Community Days, there are a few things you should check out that may have changed since you called Henderson home. Be sure to visit the Henderson Swimming Pool for open swimming in the afternoons on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. On Saturday, relive the glory days and see how your classes basketball skills match up in the Alumni Basketball Tournament. Play a round of golf at Galaway Creek Golf Course during the tournament Sunday or anytime during the weekend or visit Heritage Park on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday to see the work that has been done to preserve the stories of our ancestors making Henderson their home. We are encouraging all classes to hold their reunions on Saturday evening when there is free time on the schedule.

With so many activities going on for all age groups, there should be a way for everyone to get involved at Henderson Community Days July 11, 12, and 13. For registration forms and a complete list of events, visit the Henderson Chamber website at www.HendersonNE.com on the Play page under Community Days or pick up hard copies of registration forms and a schedule of events at City Hall.
