The York County Relay for Life event is fast approaching on Saturday, June 7 at the York County fairgrounds in York. A local team – TeamHenderson – is doing their best to raise money to help the American Cancer Society raise awareness, find cures, and improve treatment of the disease.

A personal campaign for funds will be done in Henderson. Monetary donations of any amount are welcome! At the relay event, white luminaries will encircle the track. A donation of $10 may be made to sponsor a luminary in memory of a loved one who has lost their battle to cancer or in honor of a cancer survivor. Local team members are:  Barb, Olivia, and Tierney Casper, Sharon Chvatal, Kim Epp, Kathryn Goertzen, and Melissa Goertzen. These team members may be soliciting funds through the mail, door-to-door, or by phone call.

A Zumbathon fundraising event will be held at the Heartland Community School SOUTH gym on Thursday, May 22 from 8:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m. Zumba is a high energy fun exercise party set to music. Each participant is asked to make a minimum donation of $20 to participate. Healthy snacks and water will be provided. Joni Huebert, a trained Zumba instructor, will be leading the two-hour event. Joni does a great job demonstrating all of the exercise moves in a way that is easy to follow. Breaks can be taken as participants need. Each participant will also be able to decorate a luminary for the York County Relay. No advance registration is required. Participants should use the main entrance to the school located on Front Street on the circle drive.

In addition to the Zumbathon, several vendors will be set up with items available to purchase/order with a percent of proceeds going to the Relay for Life. The two vendors that plan to participate include “Thirty-One” and Origami Owl. Thirty-one is a line of every shape and size of bag, tote, and storage container imaginable. The specials for May are a line of thermal items great for summer. Origami Owl is a line of jewelry that can be personalized with initials and charms.

The Relay for Life Event will take place on Saturday, June 7 at the York Fairgrounds. The official start time is 6:00 p.m. The special lap for cancer survivors will be at 7:00 p.m. and the evening activities will conclude at midnight. TeamHenderson will have a ‘campsite’ set up and anyone who attends is welcome to bring a chair and join the team for the evening. Food will be available to purchase from the various participating teams in attendance. TeamHenderson will be selling homemade cinnamon rolls. Cancer survivors will be given tokens to be used to get complimentary food at the various team tents. In addition to the survivors walk, a memorial slide show is shown at dusk.  The entire Relay evening is a public event.  Everyone who is interested is welcome to attend.
