Paige Mestl earned a chance to play golf at Quail Run in Columbus for state girls golf.  This was a goal of Paige’s all season, and it was a great opportunity for her as a freshman to get to the state tournament and find out that she can play with some of the best girl golfers in her class in the state.

On Monday Paige was able to shoot a 93.  She really played a consistent round and was able to really roll the ball well on the greens.  I was very impressed that she was able to control some of the nerves and get out there and put herself in good spots on the course throughout the day.  On the first day she was struggling with her driver a bit, but was able to make up for it by really hitting good iron shots and putting the ball well.   It was a pretty nice day for golf and what wind we did have she was able to handle and make the best of.  At the end of day one she was sitting in the top 20 of all golfers at the state tournament.

On Tuesday, Paige was able to shoot a 99.  This was not the day she had wanted as far as score goes, but I was proud of her for being able to battle through a couple of very difficult holes score wise.  I was happy that she was able to compose herself and grind through the round and save an okay score for the day.  Paige was really good off the tee for the most part, but it was her putter that gave her a little trouble in day 2.  She kept at it, and she kept working, and she was able to shoot in the 90’s both days.

In the end, Paige was able to be in the top 20 in Class C girls golf.  I was very happy for her, and it was great to see her work throughout the summer on the course with her dad and on her own pay off in a chance to play against some really good girl golfers.  I think Paige found out that she is every bit as good as most of the girls out there at this point, and if she can become a bit more consistent, she is going to take off.  Paige is just a freshmen, and she really enjoys the game of golf, so I really see good things coming for her.  I enjoyed coaching her this year and I am very excited about her future.
