The recent passing of country music legend, actress, and philanthropist Dolly Parton has prompted official and unofficial declarations that September 25th would be known as 9 to 5 day in her honor. The City of Seward Mayor Josh Eickmeier issued a proclamation that declared September 25th as “Give Like Dolly Day,” to prompt local donations to support the Seward Imagination Library.
The Seward Imagination Library is part of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program serving more than 2,700 communities in 5 countries. This program mails free books to children each month from birth until they start school. The idea is to provide kids with the opportunity, along with their families, to explore reading and foster early literacy.
Locally, the Seward Imagination Library is supported by multiple local service organizations, including Seward and Milford Kiwanis, Utica Lions, Seward Rotary and other groups and individuals. The Seward Imagination Library currently serves more than 500 kids each month from communities in Seward County, along with Dwight in Butler County and Gresham and Waco in York County. Literacy serves as the foundation for education. Dolly started the Imagination Library program in honor of her own father, who could not read. Her vision was to provide as many children with the opportunities to engage in reading that her father did not have growing up.
