The Bearcats traveled a long way on Monday to Alma in the first round of C2-7 subdistrict basketball. They hung on to beat the Thayer Central Titans by one point, 44-43. It was a much closer game than the one back in December, when the Bearcats easily beat the Titans at home 59-22. With the win, they will return to Alma for the second round of subdistricts, playing the number one seed, the Alma Cardinals (23-1), on Tuesday at 7:30.
GAME RECAP
After an early lead for the Bearcats in the first quarter, the Titans came back to take the lead 24-16 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Bearcats trailed by 12 points and mounted a furious comeback with 5:28 left in the fourth quarter to tie the game 37-37. They were fueled by multiple steals by Landen Rojewski, two three-pointers by Maddox Regier, and full-court pressure defense by the Bearcats.
The Bearcats were down by one point, 43-42, with 14.2 seconds left in the game, and called a timeout. They came out with a great set play to Jagger Regier under the basket, who scored with 5.2 seconds left, giving them the one-point lead, and they held on for the win against the Titans.
