Finally! A great, yummy way to remember the difference between watches and warnings. Believe it or not, tacos are a great way to remember the difference between a Severe Weather Watch and a Severe Weather Warning.
Tacos and Tornadoes

Here’s how it works:
- Watch = Taco Ingredients – You have the ingredients to make a taco, and they are all laid out. The weather conditions are right for something severe to form, but it hasn’t happened yet.
- Warning = Taco’s Ready – The prepped taco ingredients have been put together, and we’re having tacos right now. Everything’s been assembled, and now it’s go time. Severe weather—like thunderstorms, hail, high winds, flash floods, or even tornadoes—is actively happening.
Pretty tasty way to remember it, right?
Stay Ready, Stay Safe
Each year, tornadoes and severe thunderstorms cause serious injuries—and sometimes worse. The best protection is being prepared ahead of time and taking watches and warnings seriously. Whether the skies look calm or ominous, don’t wait to take action.
Here are some smart steps you can take to stay safe this season:
- Know Your Risk – Understand the types of weather your area is prone to, and stay informed with alerts from the National Weather Service (www.weather.gov).
- Get a NOAA Weather Radio – Look for one with Public Alert™ certification and a battery backup so you’re not caught off guard.
- Talk Safety with Your Others – Everyone should know what to do when severe weather strikes.
- Don’t Ignore Warnings – Even if previous alerts didn’t lead to storms, don’t gamble. Severe weather can develop quickly and unexpectedly.
- Tune in to Updates – Local radio and TV stations are excellent resources for live weather information.
- Check on Vulnerable Neighbors – Look out for the elderly, young children, and those with disabilities.
