MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION OF THE HAMPTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The meeting of the Hampton Board of Education of Hampton Public Schools was convened in open and public session on Monday, January 12, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. in the Board Room at the Hampton High School, 458 5th Street, Hampton, Nebraska.
The roll was called and the following Board members were present or absent:
Present: Grant Dose, Megan Faller, Derek Klute, Tamara Wiens, Brian Litz and Erin Olsen
Absent:
Also, in attendance were Superintendent Holly Herzberg, Secondary Principal Carson Klute, Elementary Principal Angie Arndt, Katelyn Goertzen, Tyler Mollevik, Aydenn Scherff, Ava Hurt, Max Mostek, Kirsten Mersch, and Lofton Ferguson
Notice of the meeting was given in advance by publication and/or posting in accordance with the Board approved method for giving notice of meetings. Notice of this meeting was given in advance to all members of the Board of Education. The Secretary of the Board maintains a list of the news media requesting notification of the meetings and advance notification to the listed media of the time and place of the meeting and subjects to be discussed at this meeting was provided. Availability of the agenda was communicated in the publicized notice and a current copy of the agenda was maintained as stated in the publicized notice. All proceedings of the Board of Education, except as attendance of the public.
- Call Meeting to Order: The meeting was duly called to order by Superintendent Holly Herzberg at 7:30 p.m. Board members recited the Oath of Office.
- Election of Officers: Superintendent Herzberg asked for nominations for President of the Hampton School Board. Erin Olsen nominated Grant Dose and Brian Litz seconded the nomination. Nominations ceased and it was unanimously voted that Grant Dose be elected as President of the Hampton School Board for 2026. Grant Dose opened the floor for nominations for Vice President. Brian Litz nominated Tamara Wiens for Vice President and Erin Olsen seconded the nomination. Nominations ceased and it was unanimously voted that Tamara Wiens be elected as Vice President of the Hampton School Board. Grant Dose opened the floor for nominations for Treasurer. Brian Litz nominated Derek Klute for Treasurer and Tamara Wiens seconded the nomination. Nominations ceased and it was unanimously voted that Derek Klute be elected as Treasurer of the Hampton School Board. Grant Dose opened the floor for nominations for Secretary. Tamara Wiens nominated Megan Faller for Secretary and Derek Klute seconded the nomination. Nominations ceased and it was unanimously voted that Megan Faller be elected as Secretary of the Hampton School Board.
- Announcement of Open Meetings Act Posting: At the beginning of the meeting, Holly Herzberg announced that a current copy of the Open Meetings Act is posted on the south wall of the Board Room.
- Reading and Approval of Minutes: Approved as presented.
- Reading and Approval of Board Bills: Motion by Dose, second by Klute to approve the receipts, expenditures and payment of bills as submitted by the administration to the board. After discussion, the motion carried by unanimous vote.
- Treasurer’s Report: Approved as presented.
- Board Committee Reports:
- Building/Grounds: HVAC/Boiler update, Playground needs new gravel, and the road behind the school, where the buses park, is washing out. The B/G Committee will work on getting some crushed white rock down.
- Administration Reports:
- Holly Herzberg:
- The teacher’s first day back was January 5th. Hampton teachers and staff attended a motivational speaker in Aurora with other Hamilton County staff from Giltner and Aurora. Thomas Murray reminded Hamilton County educators to revisit our “WHY” as we kicked off the new year.
- All paperwork has been completed and submitted to the state for the clean diesel rebate.
- Current board members (INCUMBENTS) will need to file at the Hamilton County Courthouse by February 17, 2026. NON-INCUMBENTS will need to file at the Hamilton County Courthouse by March 2, 2026.
- February 11th or 18th, Justin Knight will be at ESU 9 to do a Hot Topics workshop for Administrators and Board members.
- The November mailing for the Foundation was a success. Holly also issued the $500 foundation scholarship for Reagan Hansen for the 2nd semester.
- Carson Klute:
- The Junior High Boys Basketball began their season on Saturday and have two more games scheduled for this week. Much like the Girls, their season is short with multiple games per week.
- Several High School students have attended an AKRS career day and the CVA Ag Awareness day, exposing them to potential local job opportunities as well as funding sources if they choose to pursue these options for college.
- Hampton’s first participation in the SNC basketball tournament will take place the first week of February. High seeds host the opening round and all other rounds are at Centennial.
- Katelyn Goertzen:
- Seniors have started planning ceremony pieces
- Seniors have also been working on scholarship applications
- Speech season has officially started for students, with 12 students in 16 events.
- Holly on Behalf of Tammy Wolinski:
- Our 5 year Continuous Improvement Visit will be scheduled during the 2026-27 school year. The administrative team is considering possible dates to host the visit.
- Angie Arndt:
- Elementary Robotics kicked off the season last Saturday (January 10). The elementary has 7 students participating on 2 teams. They didn’t place as high as they had hoped, but learned a lot about the challenge/game for the year and were already able to make adjustments on Saturday during the competition.
- Quiz Bowl practice for 5th & 6th graders started this week. There are 13 students participating with the opportunity to create 2 teams for their competition on February 3rd.

- Motion made by Megan Faller to approve Board Committees for 2026. Motion seconded by Erin Olsen. Roll call vote was taken. Motion carried.
- Motion made by Tamara Wiens to approve the negotiated agreement for 2026-27. Motion seconded by Brian Litz. Roll call vote was taken. Motion carried.
- Motion made by Tamara Wiens to approve policy 3274.00. Motion seconded by Grant Dose. Roll call vote was taken. Motion carried.
- Motion made by Erin Olsen to approve the retirement letter for Mrs. Barb Parsley. Motion seconded by Tamara Wiens. Roll call vote was taken. Motion carried.
- Motion made by Brian Litz to approve the resignation letter for Mrs. Megan Hudiburgh. Motion seconded by Megan Faller. Roll call vote was taken. Motion carried.
- Motion made by Tamara Wiens to approve the 7-12 Principal/Activities Director contract for Jereme Jones for 2026-27. Motion seconded by Derek Klute. Roll call vote was taken. Motion carried.
- Discussion Items:
- The next meeting will be February 9th, 2026 at 7:30 p.m.
- Motion to adjourn: Motion by Derek Kulte second by Brian Litz to adjourn the meeting at 8:09 p.m. Motion carried by unanimous vote.
