Comments and Results from Head Girls Golf Coach Jon Baehr from the Hastings St. Cecilia Invite at Southern Hills Golf Course:

Last Thursday September 6th we traveled to Southern Hills Golf Course in Hastings and had a chance to see how we measured up against a lot of the teams we will see in our district meet.  G.I.C.C. is currently above and beyond what we can get to, but after that we really showed well for the third straight outing.  We shot a 420 as a team.  This was a good bit higher then our first 18 hole round, but the conditions made the course play much tougher then our previous tournaments.  The course was in great shape, but the greens were very quick and that was something that gave many of the girls problems.

Paige Mestl shot 86 today and came away with a third place finish.  Paige might have played her most complete round from tee to green, but the greens speeds gave her a bit of trouble.  Paige is playing with a lot of confidence and is only getting better.  A third place finish in this tournament is a great accomplishment and something that can only help to build confidence.  Sam Boardman fired a career low 104 today.  Sam was a bit upset she didn’t shoot a bit lower, but as a whole she showed great progress from last season to this season.  She missed out on a medal on a score card playoff as she tied 4 other girls for 14th place overall.  I believe that she has the ability to be a bit more consistent and get down in the mid 90’s for a score if not lower as the season goes on.

Lydia Quiring shot a 108 today.  This was really another nice round for Lydia.  I have said it before, but she continues to impress me with her consistent play and the scores she is shooting.  I feel Lydia is getting better each and every day and I am hopeful she that the success she has had so far this season pushes her to work that much harder on her game the rest of the year and then into next summer and fall season.  Lydia was just outside the top 15 with her score of 108.

Kaitlyn Quiring posted a 122 on the day.  Kaitlyn found the going to be a bit tougher today on the course.  She had a 64 on the front side and that really made it tougher to get that score down around where I think she should be.  I was happy that she came back on the back side and shot a lower score, but we have to find a way to be a bit more consistent with the putter and the driver.  She is hitting her irons well, but she is leaving a lot of strokes on the course in the other areas.  I believe she is very close to turning those issues around.  Kaeli Lundstrom shot a 153 on the day.  This was a very tough course for Kaeli as it pretty long and has a lot hills.  The greens gave her a bit of trouble, but as a whole I was happy that she kept a positive attitude and pushed her way through it.  Kaeli just needs to continue to work on her game and spend some time on the course on her own time.

As a whole, I think we showed that in our district we have a chance to be one of those top three teams.  The top three teams go to state as a team, and I feel if we can continue to improve and just stay solid, that we will have a great chance to send all five girls to the tournament.
