Preparations are in full swing for Heritage Day this Saturday, September 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Henderson Mennonite Heritage Park. This fun-filled day features diverse ethnic food, arts and crafts demonstrations, and live traditional music.
Last Friday, the John Huebert family fired up the black kettle for the meat rendering so cracklings and ribs would be ready to sell on Heritage Day. Come out and watch them make sausage and liverwurst on Saturday.
This year, Heritage Park will feature a newly built replica of the Gus Heinrichs Popcorn Stand that once stood on Henderson’s Main Street. The stand will be located between the Country School and East Side Cafe, and fresh popcorn will be available all day.
Another addition to this year’s Heritage Day is a siphon tube irrigation demonstration that will take place at 1:30 p.m. on the Kim Siebert farm located on Farmers Valley Road. Proceed south out of Henderson. After passing the feedlot, turn west on Road 3 and continue for one mile. When the road ends, turn south for a half mile and west on Farmers’ Valley Road. The cornfield is along the road, with the ditch and siphon tubes visible. This will be a fun and unique demonstration for all ages.
Golf carts will be available for those needing help getting around the Heritage Park. The park is located 1 ½ miles south of the Henderson I-80 Exit #342 on spur 93A.
