A dust storm led to three accidents involving nine vehicles on Thursday evening in York County.

“The visibility was like zero out there in the blowing dust,” Sheriff Paul Vrbka said.

The three accidents occurred within about 15 minutes, beginning at 5:50 p.m., he said.

The National Weather Service in Hastings reported wind gusts of 41 mph at 6 p.m., the closest time interval available.

The first accident happened on Interstate 80, a mile west of Waco, when two pickups and an SUV collided with two semi-tractor trailers, Vrbka said.

Two passenger vehicles also collided on the interstate at Henderson, he said.

A third accident occurred when two vehicles collided near St. Joseph’s Cemetery at Nobes Road and Road N east of York, the sheriff said.

The York Fire Department transported three patients to York General Hospital, Capt. Brian Quick said.

In addition to York, the Gresham and Waco fire departments responded to the string of accidents, Vrbka said.

He also thanked the York Police Department, Seward County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol, Mogul’s Towing, and Hitz Towing for their assistance at the accident scenes.
