Four Corners Health Department Press Release
Lead poisoning is dangerous, but it can be prevented. Even small amounts of lead exposure can cause lifelong health effects. To help families, Four Corners Health Department is offering FREE blood lead testing for children ages 0-6 years old. This is for a limited time only and while supplies last. Call our office at 402-362-2621 to schedule an appointment.
Why Get Your Child Tested? Many children with lead poisoning don’t look or feel sick. A simple blood test is the only way to detect lead in their body.
Lead exposure can cause:
- Damage to the brain
- Damage to the nervous system
- Damage to the reproductive system
- Hearing and speech problems
This can cause:
- Slowed growth and development
- Lower IQ
- Decreased ability to pay attention
- Learning and behavior problems
- Underperformance in school
Continued exposure to lead can cause long-term harm. Young children, especially those aged six and younger, are most vulnerable to lead poisoning. Children under six are most at risk because their developing bodies absorb lead more easily than adults.
Others who may be concerned about lead poisoning are pregnant women and anyone who may be exposed to lead at home or work. The main sources of lead exposure include lead-based paint in homes built before 1978, contaminated soil, and old plumbing.
Families can take simple steps to reduce lead exposure, such as keeping surfaces clean and washing hands frequently. However, testing is the only way to be sure if lead is present in the body. Call our office for an appointment today!
