York County Press Release

YORK – Miscalculations regarding tax credits means property taxpayers in York County were slightly overcharged – the fix will mean those who haven’t paid their taxes yet will pay a little less than they were originally billed; if they paid their first half of their taxes, credit will be applied to the second half; and if they already paid all their taxes for the year, they will receive reimbursements.

The confusing matter came before the county board of equalization this week, as York County Treasurer Megan Williams and York County Assessor Kurt Bulgrin sat down with tax list corrections.

“The tax credit rates for non-ag and ag land were not correct,” Bulgrin said, “which resulted in taxpayers being overcharged. They should have gotten more tax credits. We worked with our system provider, the treasurer and the department of revenue and we have a plan in place to fix it.”

All of the parcels have been identified.

Once the treasurer’s office has all the corrected information, they will start printing corrected statements.
The amount of credit will not be large – ranging from $10 to $100 and more for larger pieces of ag land. The average for residential owners will be about $10.

Tax payments are not being accepted right at this moment, until the amounts are all corrected.

“This will affect all parcels,” said Commissioner Randy Obermier. “All taxpayers will get notices and the staff of both departments will be informed on how to answer questions.”

“We will also send letters with their new statements as to what will be applied to their second half payment,” Williams said.

The board of equalization approved the tax list corrections and the corrective plan being implemented by the treasurer and assessor offices.
