York County Press Release
YORK – Chief Deputy York County Attorney Christopher Johnson said this week the criminal caseloads in York County Court and York County District Court were about the same in 2024 as they were in 2023.
The county attorney’s office has been compiling its end-of-year statistics, in order to take a look at trends.
“The district court felonies and the county court filings are within 2% of last year’s figures,” Johnson told the county commissioners this past week, “so the number of cases are about even with the prior year. Hopefully, we can reduce some of that high volume of cases with our adult diversion program.”
He also recapped some information he provided the commissioners with, two weeks ago, regarding juvenile court.
In the past, the majority of juveniles in the court system were perpetrators who committed crimes. In the last year, that majority switched to the juveniles in the court system being the victims of crimes.
“Compared to two years ago – two years ago, 70% of the juveniles were offenders and 30% were victims,” Johnson said. “Last year, 66.5% of the juveniles in the court system were victims of abuse and neglect.”
He said there were 47 abuse cases involving the abuse of children filed in the York County court system.
“And as I said earlier, this is why we need more CASAs (court appointed special advocates) and foster parents,” Johnson added.
