It may be 5 degrees outside and snowing, but the Kroeker Grain complex demolition is in full swing today!
Henderson had grain bins in town as far back as 1887, but today, the Kroeker Grain Complex is being demolished. It’s a bit sad to see something that has been such a landmark on Henderson’s Main Street being removed, but times change. What we know so well as Kroeker Grain was started by J.J. Kroeker and his son Harold J. Kroeker in 1926.
“The Kroeker family, along with Chris Peters, gained control of both elevators in town in 1943, and it has remained as a combined operation since then with Harold Wayne Kroeker as present manager.” (excerpt from “Holland to Henderson” history book.) After Harold Wayne’s death, his sons Jay and Paul Kroeker, who both worked there, took over the management of Kroeker Grain & Lumber.
Heartland Community School purchased the property a few months ago and contracted National Concrete Cutting out of Council Bluff, Iowa, to demolish the grain complex. The property is just west and adjacent to the school parking lot.
Despite frigid temperatures and snow coming down, the demolition was in full swing today, with residents hearing the noise from blocks away. They have been working on removing electric utilities for the past few weeks before beginning the actual demolition work.
