It was an overtime heartbreaker for the Huskie girls on Tuesday night, battling the Deshler Dragons. The Dragons prevailed winning in overtime 51-48. Mia Hiebner led the team scoring 14 points, with other Huskies in double figures Ariane Sololuze 13 and Tara Buzek 12. The Huskies struggled at the free throw line, hitting only 4-18, which helped keep the Dragons in the game. It looked like Heartland was going to squeak out the win when they were leading 42-39, but a last-second 3-pointer by Deshler’s Chloe Fangmeyer tied the game, and it went into overtime.
The boys also had a close one and led by as many as eight points in the fourth quarter but let it slip away, losing 45-50 to Deshler. Thane Wetjen led the Huskies, scoring 15 points, Maddox Regier 8, and Trenton Goertzen 7. It was a slow start for the Huskies, trailing the Dragons the entire first quarter, but a buzzer-beater 3-pointer by Maddox Regier jumpstarted their offense, making it 7-12 going into the 2nd quarter for the Huskies. The Huskies were leading most of the fourth quarter, but too many turnovers and a stalled offense kept them scoreless the last final minutes of the game.
