New head girls basketball coach Paige Peters is excited to return to the gym and start the season!
Coach Paige Peters has taken over the head coaching job for the Heartland girls’ basketball team. She assisted Erik Wetjen, last year’s head coach, and is looking forward to the season. She worked with the team this past summer, attending a few summer camps, and is excited to get going with her first season as head coach of the Huskies. Last year, the Huskies finished the season with a record of 4-15.
Growing up in Bancroft, she is no stranger to basketball. She played at Bancroft-Rosalie and was coached by her father, Rodney, a standout basketball player who grew up in Henderson. Coach Peters teaches elementary math and is also the assistant boy’s golf coach. Her new assistant coach will be Stephanie Buzek, a math teacher and technology coordinator at Heartland.
“Our roster blends experienced upperclassmen and competitive newcomers. We have 8 returning letter winners from the 23/24 season but are looking to add newcomers to the mix this year. KatrinaMarie Epp, Jamisen Klein, Isabel Johnson, and Emersyn Oswald are returning seniors. Others returning to play are sophomore Tara Buzek, junior Haley Beck, junior Mia Hiebner, sophomore Maddie Janzen, and junior Hallie Tessman.
Our team has a variety of athletes that will contribute in different ways, and it’s our job, as coaches, to put them in a position to help our team succeed,” said Coach Peters. She said her team has a “competitive mindset” and is ready to compete each day. They plan on playing at a high tempo and focusing on quality possessions.
Practice officially started on Monday, Nov. 18, with 15 girls reporting out. Their opening game will be at Fairbury on Thursday, December 5.
