Coach Buzek meets with the new Heartland Huskie Girls’ Golf Team at Galaway Creek Golf Course.
The Heartland girls’ golf team will have five girls on the roster this year, compared to only two last year. Coach Chad Buzek will begin his second year coaching the girls and is excited to have a team this year. Returning golfers are Junior Mia Hiebner and Sophomore Tara Buzek. Hiebner was a standout last year, ending her highly successful season at the Class C State meet in North Platte at Lake Mahoney, tying for fourth place.
“I have high expectations for Mia this season. She played a few junior tournaments this summer and continues to work hard on her game. I expect her to be competing in every meet this year and be right in the mix,” said Buzek. Coach Buzek said his daughter, Tara Buzek, has come a long way from where she started last year and has also worked on her game this summer, and he hopes she sees some better results this season.
Two new members of the team played volleyball last fall but have made the switch to golf. Senior Emersyn Oswald and sophomore Meggan Friesen are both no strangers to golf since their brothers all played golf for Heartland. They both have put in plenty of rounds of golf this summer in preparation for the season and a new fall sport for them. Sophomore Kinsley Friesen is brand new to golf this season and has a little ways to go before she is ready for competitive play, according to Coach Buzek.
“We will bring the new girls along slowly, and they will be able to compete in several JV meets. I really want them to learn to enjoy golf and have some fun along the way,” said Buzek.
The season begins next Thursday, August 22 in Central City at the Valley View Golf Course for a three-person scramble. It’s a warm-up for the team, but last year, Mia and Tara broke the record by scoring a scorching 63. The team has been practicing every day at Galaway Creek and hopes to be ready to compete next week.
Fall golf has a short season ending in early October, so their schedule is packed with two meets most weeks. Come out and watch the girls at their first home meet at Galaway Creek on Thursday, September 3rd.
