Four Corners Health Department Press Release

July is Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to highlight the strengths and challenges faced by Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC), and others in relation to mental health. Named for Bebe Moore Campbell, a journalist, teacher, author, and mental health supporter, this month is dedicated to continuing her legacy by focusing on the mental health needs and experiences of BIPOC communities.

Fear of judgment, cultural values, generational differences, and lack of access to resources often stop people from dealing with struggles openly and seeking the help they need. To beat these barriers, you must talk openly and honestly about mental health. Breaking the silence is a key step toward healing and prioritizing mental wellness.

Culture, ethnicity, and race all play a large role in the way that each person experiences the world and in the types of mental health support they may need. Four Corners Health Department works hard to be inclusive of those of all cultures. Several staff members are bilingual and the department recently purchased a VASCO V4 Translator so we can better communicate in any language needed. Our services are available for everyone.

We encourage everyone to take steps towards improving mental health in BIPOC communities. To support these efforts, Mental Health America has made a free BIPOC Mental Health Toolkit. The toolkit has handouts, outreach ideas, social media posts, and other resources. These can help fight stigma, break down myths, and encourage conversations about mental health.

By sharing stories, listening to others, and supporting one another, we can create a more inclusive and understanding environment where mental health is prioritized for everyone. Let’s work together to promote mental health awareness in all BIPOC communities.
