BRADSHAW– Boyd Stuhr, 89, a fourth-generation agricultural producer who farmed near Bradshaw, is being remembered as a strong advocate for agriculture at the county, state, and national levels due to his many volunteer efforts and leadership activities.
Stuhr passed away on Tuesday, March 12. According to his obituary, information from the University of Nebraska Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources and previous News-Times reporting:

Boyd graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture in 1956 and was inducted into the agricultural honoraries of Alpha Zeta and Gamma Sigma Delta. He was a charter member of the Alpha Gamma Sigma fraternity and was elected as AGS National Executive Secretary for 4 years. He served on active duty as a Navy Aviator from 1956 to 1960 and for a total of 11 years in the Naval Air Reserves.

Boyd was instrumental in the formation of the Nebraska Association of County Extension Boards. He was elected to the York County Extension Board for two three-year terms and served as its chairman of the board. He saw the need for a state organization of extension boards and served on the steering committee, where he initiated the formation of the state association and in planning the first state convention. He was elected to the first board of directors and later served as chairman of the board. Boyd also served on the Nebraska Extension Advisory Committee for four years and represented Polk, Seward and York Counties Extension Program Unit on NACEB in the early 1990s.
Boyd served on the Nebraska Foundation for 4-H Development for eight years and in 1983, he served as president of the Executive Council.

Pickrel outlined Stuhr’s long years of service to the York County Corn Growers Association and thanked him for his dedication. Stuhr died at age 89 on Tuesday.

Through the years, Boyd was active in promoting and speaking out for agriculture and the corn industry in Nebraska. He was an active member of the local, state and national Corn Growers Association. For 10 years he served on the Nebraska Corn Growers Board of Directors and also served as state treasurer.
He chaired several committees including government relations in which he testified before the Nebraska Legislature and lobbied in Congress numerous times on behalf of Nebraska corn farmers. He was instrumental in ethanol promotion and worked diligently in bringing the ethanol industry to York County.
Boyd was elected as a director of the Upper Big Blue Natural Resources District and served from 1974 to 1977. He was a director and member of the York County Feeders Association for many years and also served on the Research and Nutrition Committee of the Nebraska Livestock Feeders Association. He was a community committeeman of the York County ASCS for 16 years and worked as a field assistant for 10 of those years. He was elected and served as a county committeeman for six years.
Boyd served on the Bradshaw Board of Education for 25 years. He served on the Board of Directors of the Nebraska Association of School Boards for 12 years and was the only two term president (1982 and 1983) of NASB. He was elected as a board member of Education Service Unit Number Six and served 15 years representing agricultural concerns.

Boyd and his wife Elaine received the Nebraska Cooperative Extension Meritorious Public Service Award and were selected as the “Nebraska Honor Farm Family” by The Lincoln Journal Star in 1978. They were inducted into the York County Ag Hall of Fame and in 2022, their family was recognized with the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award at the York County Fair as the Stuhr family maintained continuous ownership of 240 acres acquired by Henry Stuhr in 1922. The Stuhrs are members of Farm Bureau and of Zion Hampton Lutheran Church.
Funeral services for Mr. Stuhr will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 19, 2024 at Zion Lutheran Church in Hampton with the Reverends David Feddern and Brandon Metcalf officiating. Services will be livestreamed at www.zionhampton.com.
Interment will follow in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Hampton, with Military Rites. Visitation will be held from 1-8 p.m. on Sunday, March 17 and from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Monday March 18, all at Metz Mortuary in York. Additionally, visitation will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Hampton on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m., where family will be present to greet friends. In lieu of flowers or plants, memorials may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church for later designation by the family. Online condolences may be directed to the family at metzmortuary.com.
