The Heartland girls’ and boys’ basketball teams hosted the first round of the SNC tournament on Monday, January 29. The girls faced off against Fillmore Central, who had previously beaten the Huskies by 20 points in regular season action. Mia Hiebner and Hayden Mierau each had nine points, leading their team in scoring.

This time around, the Huskies were able to keep ahead of the Panthers, turning up their intensity in the 2nd quarter and scoring on turnovers. They won over the Panthers 38-27. They will continue SNC tournament play on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against the Sutton Fillies in Sutton.

The boys played against the Fairbury Jets, and it was a very low-scoring game, with the Jets coming out ahead, winning 29-25. Despite the Jet’s 16 turnovers and 13 steals by the Huskies, they could not capitalize and score when needed.

Poor shooting by the Huskies was the difference in the game, shooting 16.7% from the field and 13% from the three-point line. Carter Siebert was the leading scorer with 8 points. The boys will play the loser of the David City/Sutton game that will be played on Tuesday, January 30, in a consolation game on Saturday at Centennial at 12:45 p.m.
