“Like mother, like daughter, like granddaughter, like grandmother,” could be the family mantra for Maxine Bergen and Kim Hull – one of the mother/daughter quilt teams to display their work at Henderson’s Q125 Quilt Show next weekend.

Maxine’s grandmother quilted and her mother quilted, how could she not continue this tradition?  She is now in the middle of five generations of quilters.  Maxine’s daughter Kim machine quilts, and Kim’s daughters have pieced and quilted in their 4-H years as well.

Maxine’s first quilt was made back in 1963.

As the years passed, family quilts wore out and the size of the beds went from regular, to queen, to king.  More quilts needed to be made!

In the 1980’s, Maxine took an adult class on quilt piecing.  It was so easy and fun that she thought that she could teach it herself.   She taught a “Sampler Quilt” class for 10 years at her home – one class per winter.

When Kim’s girls were babies, she was in Nebraska for a weekend and asked her mom to teach her how to do “that quilt thing”. Maxine got out her double knit squares and showed Kim how to make a 4-patch. Kim almost gave up but then her mom let her use some cotton squares and “life has never been the same”. Kim has owned a quilt shop

in Andover, KS and has been a long arm machine quilter for 14 years.

The artistry of Maxine Bergen and Kim Hull, along with seven other quilters, can be seen at The Henderson Mennonite Heritage Park (1.5 miles south of the I-80 Henderson exit) on April 28 and 29 from 1-5 p.m. each day.  The entry fee allows visitors to enjoy both the quilt show and all buildings at Heritage Park.  This event is part of Henderson’s celebration of 125 years with various events scheduled through 2012.
