Not all Seniors know what they want to do after graduation but Cort Regier has it figured out and can’t wait.  He is a senior at Heartland and just received the news that he received a NMC Diesel Technology scholarship sponsored by Caterpillar.  After applying for the scholarship he was selected after two interviews into the program at Central Community College in Hastings.

Regier admits that he doesn’t feel normal “unless my hands are greasy and I’m turning a wrench.”  He will get plenty of chances to do just that starting this summer.  The scholarship provides for a summer internship with NMC, which is the official Caterpillar dealership in Nebraska, after a week long orientation in Omaha this June.  He will work at the Doniphan NMC Service Center for the rest of the summer getting valuable hands on experience before he enters college in the fall.

The scholarship pays for tuition and books and in addition provides Regier with a tool set and cabinet valued at $15,000.  “It is a two year program and I also will have a job provided for me my second summer at another Nebraska NMC location,” said Regier.  Regier is no stranger to working around agricultural equipment and diesel trucks.  He works summers for area farmer Dean Jost and helps his Dad, Jody Regier, who drives a semi-truck.

Reiger is an active member of the Heartland FFA chapter and is getting ready to compete in the welding competition at districts next week.  “I’m pretty much a self-taught welder,” said Regier.  His other areas of interest in FFA have been in natural resources and agronomy.  He plans to specialize in the agricultural side of the degree he will pursue at CCC.

Congratulations to Cort Regier for being chosen by Mrs. Koehler, Heartland Counselor, as the Heartlandbeat.com Student of the Month.
