Behind the scenes, their work may seem invisible to most of us but of eternal importance. They are a small group of women who have one thing in common–a love and desire to support Heartland Community School through prayer. For the past six years, Jo Larson has been the facilitator of a local group of women who meet weekly at her home during the school year to pray for Heartland students, staff, teachers and the entire K-12 school. They are a local chapter of what has grown to be an international organization called Moms In Touch.
The mission statement of Moms In Touch is to “impact children and schools worldwide by gathering mothers to pray.†Jo says that their group is not only for mothers but grandmothers and anyone who wants to pray for our school and kids. And pray is what they do. Each week they follow a specific prayer sheet that guides them through a scripture based four step process of prayer–praise, confession, thanksgiving and intercession.
The ABC’s of Moms in Touch is to “always be on time, be committed and remember the importance of confidentiality.†The group that meets at Jo’s home on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 AM can range from two or three women up to six members. It is a very intimate setting when they begin their prayer session around the dining room table that lasts about an hour. They make it a habit not to serve refreshments until after they have finished praying which is their main focus.
Their last meeting for the school year was right before graduation so they had a list of all Heartland’s graduating seniors. Each name was read out loud and prayed over by the group. During the school year they pray for one class each week. At the end of their session, specific prayer requests are taken ranging from a sick child with a lingering fever to the upcoming transition of the five new faculty hires at Heartland.
Moms in Touch is an ecumenical group and is open to anyone with a heart to pray for their kids and school. There are over a hundred chapters in Nebraska and groups are organized in a variety of ways usually focusing on one school. “Anyone is welcome to come,†said Jo. They will resume their weekly meetings when school starts in August. Whether you knew it or not, the students, teachers and staff at Heartland were “bathed†in prayer this past year by Heartland’s own “prayer warriors.â€
