YORK – A rattlesnake was found outside a York business Monday, June 2, and York police officers responded.
“Last night at about 7:23 p.m., officers responded to an animal call in the 700 block of South Lincoln Avenue,” explained York Police Captain Russ Coffey. “The call was regarding a possible rattlesnake outside a business which was open with customers present. When officers arrived, they confirmed it was a rattlesnake and to our knowledge we believe this was a timber rattlesnake which we understand is not common in York but has been known to be in the southeast corner of the state.
“We know their venom is highly toxic and can cause serious harm and potentially even death in severe cases,” Captain Coffey said. “While rattlesnake bites are generally not fatal, they should be taken seriously so it was determined the safest course of action in this circumstance was to dispose of the snake, which they did. It is unknown how the rattlesnake ended up where it was found.”
Someone who was at the business when the snake was found said children initially heard the sound of the snake rattling and alerted adults, who then found the rattlesnake. The accompanying photo was taken by a parent of one of those children.
