The following is the official report from Henderson Police Chief Prusia concerning the burglary that took place on Wednesday, June 4 at 9:12 p.m at the Henderson Aquatic Center.

Synopsis: This report contains information on the arrest of burglary suspect Joseph D. Regner at the Henderson Aquatic Center located in the city of Henderson, State of Nebraska.

On June 4, 2025 at approximately 2112 hours, I received a call from Hannah Shefferd in reference to a possible burglary at the Henderson Aquatic Center located at 1090 Birch Street, Henderson, Nebraska 68371.  She informed me that her 8-year-old son, Quenton, told her that he saw a man climb on the dumpster, hop the fence and go into the north side of the building where the snack bar is located. (The Shefferd’s live just across the street to the north of the pool.)

After speaking with Ms. Shefferd, I got into the patrol vehicle and went to the pool.  I radioed into dispatch and informed them of the call and requested another unit for backup.

After acquiring a set of keys, I entered the same door as what was told to me by Shefferd.  It should be noted that the door was locked from the inside.  I did radio dispatch and inform them that I was going to enter the building.

After entering the building, I did a search of the snack bar area, the lobby area and the employee locker room.  After searching those I then entered the men’s bathroom / shower room and searched the areas of the stalls, the shower area and the changing area and did not locate anyone.

I left the men’s bathroom / shower room and proceeded to the women’s bathroom / shower room.  In the women’s bathroom / shower room I again searched stalls, changing areas and, while searching the shower area, I saw a white male, approximately 5’9”, 150 pounds wearing dark clothing, a black neoprene ski mask hiding in the corner of the shower area.

Upon locating the subject in the shower area, I asked him why he was in there.  He stated, “I’m not hurting anything.”  I informed him that I was with the police department and he was under arrest for burglary and trespassing.

At this point he came towards me; I stood in a defensive position.  He tried to push past me and I grabbed him by the front of his sweatshirt to stop him.  He then grabbed me and we began to scuffle and exited the shower into the changing area of the locker room.  I then tried to take him to the ground to detain him but was unable.

We continued to wrestle and I then pushed him into the wall next to the door to exit onto the pool deck, we then went through the door and, at that point, I was able to do a leg sweep and knock him onto the ground.  It was at this point that York County Deputies showed up and assisted in detaining the suspect.

Upon searching the suspect and his belongings, which were a black backpack and a small black bag, and a small plastic ice cream carton, Deputy Ziegler and I found a drug kit that contained drug paraphernalia, and a small amount of white powder believed to be methamphetamine and a hunting knife with an approximately 4-inch blade.  Also within the backpack was a tobacco pipe and a key to the snack door entrance.

The suspect, later identified as Joseph Regner, was taken into custody, and it was decided that Deputy Ziegler would take the lead on the case as he is in the field training stage, and it would be a good experience.

The following is the report from the York County Sheriff’s Department and a picture of the suspect.

On 6/4/2025 at approximately 2112 hours, Deputies were detailed to assist the Chief of The Henderson Ne. Police Dept page for a report of a burglary in progress at the Henderson Aquatic Center, located at 1100 Birch Street.

After arriving on scene, a male was located inside the Aquatic Center and an attempt to detain the subject was made. The subject resisted arrest and began to fight with the Officer and Deputies. The subject was eventually apprehended.
