Heartland began its chapter of Girls on the Run 11 years ago and is still going strong. On Sunday, April 27th, 11 Heartland 3rd- 5th-grade girls participated in this annual event at the Air Park in Lincoln, completing a 5K run. The 5K run is a celebration and closing event for the participants in the program. It’s a joyful time for each girl to enjoy their accomplishments. Each season comes to an end with a celebratory 5K. Everyone receives a commemorative medal to celebrate this incredible achievement.

It’s a 24-week program that promotes physical activity and includes a curriculum that teaches life skills and healthy habits, fostering confidence through a variety of fun activities. This year, Heartland teachers Stephanie Miller and Tara Maltsberger led the group, assisted by high school students Madison Mason and Lexi Inglesbe.
The top fundraiser for the Southeast Region was Heartland’s Tynslee Ogorzolka, a 4th grader at Heartland. She raised $520, which will be allocated to future scholarships and expenses for the Girls on the Run organization. For her efforts, she received a “Bedazzled” cape and a bunch of swag!

The Heartland group began meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays in March, said Maltsberger. Congratulations to these girls and sponsors for completing this worthwhile program!
