Austin Schmidt (12), Tara Buzek (10 and Brian Bearinger (9) traveled to Lincoln on Saturday, November 9th, to participate in the 2024 Fall Husker Invitational Quiz Bowl competition at the UNL campus. The competition consisted of 14 teams from 9 schools. The tournament was an official National Academic Quiz Tournament (NAQT) competition.
This was the first NAQT tournament Heartland had attended, and it was an interesting experience. A couple of the main differences in this tournament included three bonus questions after each toss-up and prizes awarded to top individual performers.
The Heartland team competed in 10 rounds of competition and ended the day in the top bracket with a 6-4 record. This ranked the team 5th out of the 14 teams. Heartland had victories over teams from Omaha Westside, Omaha Nation, Wahoo, Milford, Raymond Central, and Elkhorn High. The losses were to two teams from Elkhorn North, Elkhorn B, and Norris.
In addition to the impressive team performance, Senior Austin Schmidt ended the day ranked as the 3rd highest competitor based on the number of correct toss-up answers he gave during all of the competitions.
