Friday, November 1st, was a great day for the Heartland quiz bowl teams as three teams competed at the Central City. Unlike most quiz bowl competitions, this competition was not divided by school size. This allowed the Heartland teams to compete against teams they do not usually face. The competition consisted of 50 teams, and each team competed in 3 round-robin matches in the morning and then was placed into one of three brackets for the afternoon angle elimination tournament.
The top 16 teams competed in the Gold bracket, and the Heartland A team was ranked 4th after finishing the morning with a record of 3-0. The Heartland B team finished the morning 2-1, and the Heartland C team finished 1-2. Both teams were placed in the Silver bracket, made up of the next 16 teams.
The A team of Austin Schmidt (12), Adi Duerksen (11), Mia Hiebner (11), and Tara Buzek (10) finished the day with a record of 6-1 with victories over teams from Fillmore, Milford, Schuyler, David City, Seward, and McCool Junction. Their only loss was to Central City, and they lost by one question. They came home as the Gold bracket 3rd place team.
The B team of Siddalee Kliewer(12), Lydia Jahnke (12), Kate Franz (11), Andrew Onnen (11), and Nic Opfer (10) finished the day with a 2-2 record after a one-question loss to Schuyler.
The C team of Faith Hiebner (11), Abby Nolan (11), Emma Ott (10), Zaine Swartzendruber (10), and Brian Bearinger(9) finished the day with a 4-3 record and was the Silver bracket 3rd place team. They had wins against Schuyler, Nebraska Lutheran, Columbus Scotus, and O’neill. They lost to eventual Silver champion GI Northwest in the semi-final round.
The last competition of the fall season will be on Saturday, November 9th, at UNL.
