Heartland Quiz Bowl Team Brings Home Gold Medals

Heartland competed in a general knowledge quiz bowl tournament in Seward on Wednesday, September 18.

The “A” team of Austin Schmidt, Adi Duerksen, Kate Franz, and Tara Buzek finished the day undefeated with a record of 7-0. They had decisive wins over Howells-Dodge, Hampton, Osceola, Shelby-Rising City, and Fullerton and won the championship by defeating Shelton. They outscored their opponents 1,125 points to 180. They each earned a gold medal and brought home the trophy. 

The “B” team of Andrew Onnen, Faith Hiebner, Riley Quiring, Emma Ott, and Rigs Newton finished the day 1-3. This came with a close loss by one question to Nebraska Lutheran and a close loss to the eventual 3rd place finisher, Osceola, in the elimination round.

The morning was a round-robin tournament, in which Heartland defeated the Dorchester B team and then lost close matches against the number 1 seed Shelton and the Dorchester A team.

The teams are coached by Mrs. Ruhl. 

On Wednesday, these Heartland students competed in the 21st Annual Nebraska Federation of Woman’s Club Young Women’s Quiz Bowl tournament. The team finished the day with a 1-3 record.  The morning was a round-robin tournament where Heartland defeated Dorchester B team and then lost close matches against the number 1 seed Shelton and Dorchester A team.  The afternoon was a single-elimination tournament, and 11-seed Heartland faced six-seed Sandy Creek. At the end of the 15-minute round, the score was tied 60-60, and the match went to sudden death.  On the extra question, Sandy Creek just beat the buzz in by Heartland to advance to the next round.
