YORK – On Monday morning, Oct. 7, early in-person voting started in Nebraska, and York County residents were turning out in significant numbers.
At mid-morning Monday, York County Clerk Mary Melby said they were seeing a “great turnout” of early voters coming to the courthouse to cast their ballots.
“We even had some people standing in line, waiting to cast their ballots, when we opened for business,” Melby said. “I have a feeling this is a sign we are going to have a really good turn-out of voters for this general election.”
Registered voters can go to the election office (located across the hall from the clerk’s office in the York County Courthouse) to get their ballots.
Melby and her staff assist voters with receiving the correct ballot based on where they live. Individuals can take the ballot home with them and return it later, or they can vote right then and there. The commissioners’ meeting room (across the hall) has been opened up for private voting spaces. Once in-house voting is completed, the individual then returns the ballot to Melby and her staff, who securely store it until counting time on election day.
Those who take ballots home (which a number of people were doing when this reporter was present) can be brought back to the clerk’s office, mailed to the clerk’s office, or placed in the secure drop box located on the west side of the courthouse.
Of course, there is also Election Day itself when the polls are open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., when ballots can be cast.
