The Nebraska State Fair just wrapped up, and several Heartland Community School students competed in the educational divisions for K-12 students, coming home with ribbons and cash!
The Education Department of the Nebraska State Fair hosts several educational activities for grades K-12. Students may enter competitions in poetry recitation, mathematics, illustration, grammar, and group art, to name a few. Students do not need to qualify at the County level to enter the State Fair.
Educational competitions include a Quiz Bowl for all ages, and the team of Heartland students Tara Buzek (sophomore), Mia Hiebner (junior), and Austin Schmidt (senior) won first-place ribbons on Sunday, August 25. They did not represent Heartland as a school but entered on their own.
The State Fair Quiz Bowl consisted of round-robin play, and each game had 30 questions. For first place, they received a $100 scholarship to be divided amongst them, a plaque, and their blue first-place ribbons!
From L to R: Mia Hiebner, Austin Schmidt and Tara Buzek.
Here are the results for grades 9-12 educational competition divisions for Heartland students:
Austin Schmidt – 1st place Social Studies, 3rd place Math, 4th place Science, 5th place Grammar, 5th place Spelling
