Four Corners Health Department Press Release
“Happy harvest!” “Harvest blessings!” Pumpkin spice and everything nice!” For many people fall brings great excitement and a lot of fun things. Pumpkin patches, football games, apple cider, pumpkin spice, and kettle corn are included as the list goes on and on. Farmers however have much more to worry about, as fall approaches so does harvest.
October 12 th is National Farmer’s Day. Being in the midst of harvest season, it’s more important than ever to thank your local farmers. One of the best ways to do this is to help them stay safe. People who farm and people who don’t can take many simple steps to keep everyone safe this harvest, especially on the road.
Here are some tips to consider:
Plan extra time. This time of year, we are more likely to see tractors and other farm machines moving from field to field. Give yourself extra time in case you get behind one on the road.
Stay patient. If you get behind a slow-moving vehicle, take a deep breath. Only pass when it is safe, and you are in a passing zone.
Be seen. Be sure all of your lights are working. Use turn signals with plenty of time. For slow-moving vehicles, use reflective tape and signs to warn people you may be slow. If you are in or near moving equipment, wear bright colors so that you can be seen.
Be aware of your surroundings. Whether on foot, in a car, or piece of machinery, keep an eye on what’s around you. All drivers have blind spots. Be sure not to stand or drive in one without the driver knowing you’re there.
Take care of you. In the busy season, it’s easy to focus only on the work that needs to be done. But you can only do the work well if you are taking care of yourself. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Don’t skip meals. Get plenty of sleep. Protect your skin from the sun. Make sure you take time for the people and things that you love most of all.
Wear what you need. Depending on the job you’re doing, you may need to wear different things. You may need gloves, earplugs, a mask to protect from dust, safety glasses, or more. What’s the weather like? You may want to wear layers as the temperature fluctuates throughout the day quite a bit. Be sure to always have sunscreen, sunglasses, and a way to tie back any long hair.
Have a plan. Do you have a plan in case something were to go wrong? Keep a first aid kit and have emergency numbers handy. Don’t use your phone while driving, but be sure to have it with you and charged. Then you can call for help in case of an accident, whether it’s a flat tire or something more extreme.
Ask when you don’t know. You don’t know what you don’t know. It’s impossible for somebody to know everything. There’s nothing wrong with asking to learn more.
