Heartland Community Schools Began Demolition and Dirtwork on School Expansion Project July 31st

If you haven’t noticed, there is plenty of pre-construction action happening in and around the Heartland Community Schools campus. The demolition phase of the Heartland Community School building project began on July 31, according to Heartland Superindentent Jeremy Klein.

“Right now, we are in the demolition phase of the project, taking out concrete, fencing, and doing earthwork,” said Klein. Demolition and removal of concrete and fencing have begun on the east side of the elementary building. The line of pine trees that bordered the north end of the playground has been completely removed, so there is a clear view from the playground to the north parking lot.

The tree line behind the elementary playground has all been removed.

The pole vault pit and long jump areas on the north side of the new gym have also been removed. All the concrete near the concession stand has been removed, and barrier fencing is being installed to protect the working areas during the construction.

Concrete has been removed in front of the concession stand.

“We generally meet every two weeks with the architect, owner of Hausmann Construction, and contractors to review the flexible master schedule, which allows us to reorganize if necessary,” said Klein.

When the demo and earthwork are completed, the next phase will be installing all the utilities underground, like the storm sewer drainage, which should begin as soon as next week, said Klein.

“We hope to have public access put back together on the west side of the Voag building by the first home football game on September 6,” said Klein. The elementary playground will be somewhat altered, but they hope to keep most of it accessible during the construction. A temporary fenced-in area in the grass will be created west of the circle drive in front of the school for the preschool kids to use, said Elementary Principal Dana Reinke.

After the demo and underground utilities are completed, they plan to dig footings and pour concrete for the foundation work. It is exciting for Heartland to finally see this long-awaited project get off the ground.
