York County Press Release
YORK — Another tragic crash has happened in York County on Highway 34, as one person was killed in a car/semi accident at the intersection of Highways 34 and 81 on the west side of York Wednesday morning, July 10, at approximately 11 a.m.
Lt. Alex Hildebrand with the York County Sheriff’s Department said at the scene, the driver of the car was eastbound when the driver failed to stop at the stop sign. He said the vehicle was hit by a semi on Highway 81 as it was going through the intersection.
The driver of the car was pronounced deceased at the scene. It did not appear the semi-driver was seriously injured.
Assisting the York County Sheriff’s Department at the scene was York Fire and Rescue, and the Nebraska State Patrol and other agencies.
Lt. Hildebrand said the investigation into the crash is ongoing as the scene is still active, with troopers directing traffic and the clean-up efforts are underway. However, traffic is still moving through the area.
The identity of the deceased will not be released until next of kin have been identified.
“It’s so horrible; we have had two fatality accidents within a 1/4 mile of each other in less than 24 hours,” Lt. Hildebrand, referring to yesterday’s fatality accident just 1/4 mile west of Wednesday’s scene, which was near the entrance to the York Municipal Airport.
There was also a fatality accident in York County on Highway 34 on the Fourth of July, at the intersection with Road P, when a motorcyclist was killed.
And in late May, three people were killed in a two-vehicle accident at the junction of Highway 34 East and Highway 81, on the west side of York.
