Upper Big Blue NRD Press Release Upper Big Blue and Central Platte NRDs to offer upcoming activities to celebrate Nebraska Bird Month. Avian enthusiasts are invited to participate in upcoming bird-watching events in the Central Platte and Upper Big Blue Natural Resources Districts (NRDs). These family-friendly events are free and great opportunities to see wetlands and flood detention cells up close to celebrate Nebraska Bird Month. Central Platte NRD’s Birding Event will be held Saturday, April 27, from 7:00 a.m. until noon at the Prairie Silver Moores Flood Cells. The site is located just 6 miles northwest of Grand Island near the Cornhusker Army Ammunition site. Head West on Old Potash Road or take Highway 11 to enter the gate along Schauppsville Road. Several wildlife biologists will be on-site to assist with bird identification. You’ll also have the chance to win several wildlife-themed raffle prizes. The Upper Big Blue NRD will host a birding event the following weekend on Saturday, May 4, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at Teal View Wetland Education Area near Hampton. This public access wetland is managed by the Upper Big Blue Natural Resources District and is frequented by thousands of birds each year. Thanks to a partnership with Nebraska Game and Parks, the NRD will have 20 sets of binoculars and birding guides available for use at the event. There is no cost to attend and some refreshments, as well as some swag for Nebraska Bird Month, will be provided. Bring a friend and explore nature’s wonders in a wetland, one of Nebraska’s most important and endangered landscapes. Participants are encouraged to: Wear quiet clothing (no noisy fabrics or buckles) in natural colors to blend in with the wetland surroundings (camo optional!). Bring something to sit on. Plan for stillness. Participants will spread out in the space and observe wildlife quietly. The birding activity will be self-guided. Bring a camera or journal to record your experience. Plan ahead: Teal View is minimally developed and has no bathroom facilities. The event at Central Platte’s Prairie Silver Moores Flood Cells will have port-a-potties. Use bug spray and dress appropriately (long pants and long sleeves, tall socks, etc) to deter ticks and other critters. Keep an eye on the weather and the NRD websites! In case of inclement weather, the events will be rescheduled. |
