Heartland senior Mariah Tessman signed with the Doane University track program, where she will continue her pole vaulting career. It’s really not surprising she eventually chose Doane since her father, Corbin Tessman, a Henderson graduate, was a pole vaulter at Doane from 1996-2000.
“My parents were really a big reason why I eventually chose Doane, and I really loved the atmosphere. It seems like a good place for me,” said Mariah. Her mother, Lisa, also attended Doane and met Corbin there, so it’s definitely a special place for their family. Mariah plans on majoring in elementary education at Doane.
“It’s pretty cool that Doane’s Head Track & Field Coach, Ed Fye, was the jump coach when I was at Doane, and now he helped recruit Mariah as well,” said Corbin.
“I’m super excited and proud of what Mariah has accomplished in her track career so far at Heartland. I’m not surprised at all about her decision to pursue pole vaulting at the college level since pole vaulting is her passion,” said Heartland head track coach Christa Lindsay.
Mariah went to state in the Class C pole vault her freshman year, going 10′ and placing 9th, and again doing the same her sophomore year at the state track meet. She was sidelined for much of her junior season after an ACL surgery, but she still qualified for state, placing 3rd in Class D at 9’6″. Her personal best vault was at the Grand Island Central Nebraska track meet, where she went 10’7″.
