YORK COUNTY – The York County Sheriff’s Department was very busy Sunday evening, Jan. 21, into Monday morning, Jan. 22, as deputies responded to 37 accidents due to blowing snow.
According to Sergeant Taylor Samek, “roadway conditions throughout York County deteriorated as snow, ice or slush began to develop, caused by blowing wind which created significant travel issues. Deputies with the York County Sheriff’s Department, along with troopers from the Nebraska State Patrol, responded to 22 non-injury motor vehicle collisions, 13 motorist assists, and three injury accidents.
Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported in any of the injury collisions. These incidents were predominantly located along the Interstate 80 corridor between mile markers 342 (Henderson) and 360 (Waco) along with Highway 81 near Road 4.”
Sergeant Samek said further, “during an investigation into a non-injury motor vehicle collision on Interstate 80 near mile marker 358, a deputy was nearly struck by a semi-truck which was traveling too fast for conditions, lost control, and then slid into the median. Luckily, the deputy was able to jump out of the way before the semi-truck struck him.\
“This serves as an excellent reminder that when you are driving and see emergency/warning lighting, please slow down, move over, and drive cautiously. Also, if you can stay at home during inclement weather, please do so.”
Sergeant Samek said the YSO wanted to “thank the NSP Troop C night shift, York County 911, the York Fire Department, Hitz Towing, and Mogul’s Towing for providing assistance through the evening and night.”
