At approximately 6:38 p.m., on Monday, Jan. 15, deputies with the York County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to a multi-vehicle collision in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 near mile marker 354, according to YSO Sergeant Taylor Samek.
Upon their arrival, deputies located three separate semi-trucks involved in the collision, along with cattle scattered over several miles of Interstate 80. Investigation into the incident revealed that a semi-truck was parked on the shoulder due to a mechanical issue and was struck from behind by a cattle hauler, which then collided with another semi-truck passing by. Thankfully, no injuries were reported by any of the drivers involved in this incident.
Due to this collision, Interstate 80 eastbound was closed for several hours from mile marker 348 (Bradshaw) to mile marker 360 (Waco) so emergency crews could investigate, clean up, and gather the cattle that escaped during the collision.
“Our office, along with the Nebraska State Patrol, also responded to numerous stranded motorists in between York and Waco who attempted to drive down impassable county roads after being diverted off the interstate due to this incident,” Sergeant Samek said. “All motorists who called in were recovered and transported to nearby hotels for the evening.
“The York County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Nebraska State Patrol Troop C Night Shift, the York Police Department, and Hitz Towing, who responded to the incident and provided assistance,” Sergeant Samek said further.
