Work began on the City’s first spec house on North Main Street with Friesen Construction pouring the footings and basement.

It’s always good news when a new home is being built in Henderson, but the latest new build is especially exciting for the City of Henderson.

This past summer, the City of Henderson was awarded a housing grant through the state’s Rural Workforce Housing Fund to build affordable housing. Today, that is becoming a reality for the City as they are beginning to build their first spec home.

“We applied and received approval for a loan of $299,000 through SENAHC, which is the organization used for receiving the money.  The general contractor is SENDD Contracting, and they take care of taking all bids,” said City Clerk Connie Brown.

The City is building on a lot that was gifted to them from the Glen Quiring family on 1141 North Main Street. The property was condemned, so the City demolished the previous house and removed trees to prepare it for new construction.

Friesen Construction got the bid to pour the basement for the house and has been busy the past week pouring the footings and basement. “SENDD Contracting will try to utilize local contractors and will be accepting bids on the project. If they get it enclosed soon, they expect to finish the house in 6-7 months,” said Brown.

The City Council met Tuesday night at their regular meeting and decided on the home’s selling price of $329,000. It can be sold anytime during the building phase and will be advertised for sale by the City.

The home will have a two-car garage, full basement, three bedrooms, and two baths and will include 36” interior doorways. According to Brown, the house plan was determined by a choice of plans provided by SENDD and one that would fit the particular size of this lot.

“We expect to begin planning for our second spec home in a few months, which will be located on Lot #6 in the Providence subdivision,” said Brown.

It’s great to see the results of all the hard work and planning the Henderson City Council, City Clerk, and Mayor have accomplished with this project to provide affordable housing and ensure future growth for Henderson.
